TEN QUIET MINUTES.

This week's practice is a simple ten-minute guided meditation you can do at your kitchen table, on the sofa, or in a parked car. No apps, no incense, no experience required — just you and your breath.

The Session · 10 minutes

A guided reset, minute by minute

Read it through once, then set a soft ten-minute timer and let the structure carry you. It's normal — expected, even — for the mind to wander. Noticing that it has wandered is the practice.

0–1 min

Arrive

Sit comfortably, feet on the floor, hands resting anywhere. Let your eyes close or soften toward the floor.

"I have nowhere else to be for ten minutes. This is the appointment."
1–3 min

Settle the breath

Without changing anything, notice the breath as it is. Then gently lengthen the exhale — in for four, out for six — for a few rounds, and let the counting fall away.

3–6 min

Body scan, head to heels

Move your attention slowly downward: forehead, jaw, shoulders, hands, belly, hips, legs, feet. At each stop, invite that area to soften by five percent. Nothing dramatic — just a little less holding.

"Wherever I find tension, I don't fight it. I just say: you can put that down."
6–9 min

Rest in the breath

Let attention settle where the breath is most vivid — nostrils, chest, or belly. When the mind drifts to dinner, emails, or a conversation from 2011, quietly name it "thinking" and return. Every return is one repetition of the real exercise.

9–10 min

Close gently

Widen your attention to the sounds of the room. Take one deeper breath, let your eyes open, and stay seated for a few seconds before rejoining your day.

"Ten minutes of nothing — and somehow, everything feels slightly more possible."
Between Sessions

Five micro-pauses for real life

Meditation doesn't only live on a cushion. These thirty-second pauses are the week's secret ingredient — small moments of attention hidden inside ordinary days.

  1. The kettle pause

While the water boils: do nothing else. Simply stand, breathe, and watch the steam rise.

  2. The doorway breath

One long exhale each time you cross your front doorway — coming in or going out.

  3. The single-task lunch

The first three bites of one meal, eaten without a screen — noticing taste, texture, temperature.

  4. The red-light reset

In the car or in a queue: drop the shoulders, unclench the jaw, take three slow breaths.

  5. The closing ritual

End the workday by writing tomorrow's top three tasks, then closing the laptop like you mean it.

The Weekly Plan

Seven days, one gentle rhythm

Aim for the full ten-minute session four times this week, and lean on micro-pauses every day. Adjust freely — this is a rhythm, not a rulebook.

MON10-min session
TUEMicro-pauses only
WED10-min session
THUMicro-pauses only

If ten minutes feels impossible

Start with three. A short practice you actually do may help build the habit far better than a long one you avoid. The timer can grow next week.

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes — including you."Anne Lamott
